According to the Islamic calendar, the month of Shawwal follows the month of Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad related that it was blessed to fast for six days in the month of Shawwal after the Ramadan Eid. The hadith that reports this is as follows: "For whoever fasts during Ramadan and then fasts for six days during Shawwal it will be as if they have fasted for the entire year."[i] As we can see from the joyful news given to us in this hadith, anyone who fasts for six days during Shawwal after having fasted during Ramadan shall be considered as having fasted for an entire year. One explanation regarding this hadith could be that every good deed is rewarded ten times as much. When one multiples the thirty days of Ramadan and six days from Shawwal by ten we arrive at approximately the number of days in one year.
